China Tourist Visa (L Visa)

The essential guide to obtaining your Chinese tourist visa for the Silk Road

For most international travelers, a China Tourist Visa (L visa) is required to explore the Silk Road routes through Xinjiang, Gansu, Qinghai, and other Chinese provinces. The standard L visa allows a stay of 30-90 days with single, double, or multiple entries. As a registered Chinese travel agency, Silk Road Wonders provides official invitation letters for all confirmed tour bookings at no additional cost — a critical document that significantly strengthens your visa application.

Application Steps

1

Prepare Your Passport

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date into China and have at least 2 blank visa pages.

2

Complete the Application Form

Fill out the China Online Visa Application (COVA) form at the official Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) website. The form is available in English and several other languages.

3

Gather Supporting Documents

Prepare: recent passport photo (48mm x 33mm, white background), round-trip flight itinerary, hotel reservations or our invitation letter, proof of financial means (bank statements), and travel insurance documentation.

4

Submit Your Application

Visit your nearest Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) in person. Most countries require in-person submission with biometric data collection. Processing takes 4-10 business days (standard) or 2-3 days (express, additional fee).

5

Receive Your Visa

Collect your passport with the visa sticker. Double-check all details: name spelling, passport number, entry dates, and number of entries. Contact the consulate immediately if you find any errors.

💡 Pro Tip: Apply for a multiple-entry visa if your Silk Road itinerary includes side trips to Central Asian countries (Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan) with returns to China. A double-entry visa is the minimum recommended for cross-border Silk Road itineraries. We recommend applying at least 6 weeks before departure.

China Transit Visa-Free Policies

Short stays without a visa in select Chinese cities

China offers visa-free transit policies that allow eligible travelers from 54 countries (including USA, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others) to enter certain cities without a visa when transiting to a third country. This can be ideal for a quick Silk Road taster in cities like Xi'an or Beijing before continuing your journey.

PolicyDurationEligible Cities/RegionsRequirements
144-Hour Transit Up to 6 days Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Nanjing, and more (20+ cities) Must arrive from Country A and depart to Country B (not return to A). Valid onward ticket required. Stay confined to the designated region.
